Black Entertainment Television is an American cable network based in Washington, D.C. targeted toward African-American and urban audiences in the United States. The network is commonly referred to as BET and most of its programming comprises hip-hop and R&B music videos as well as religious programming and urban-oriented movies and series.
The BET Awards were established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year. The awards are presented annually and broadcast live on BET.
The 2007 BET Awards
The nominations for the 2007 BET Awards were announced live from Hollywood at a press conference and live on BET's video countdown show, "106 & Park" on Wednesday, May 16, 2007. Tichina Arnold, 50 Cent, T.I., and Robin Thicke announced the nominations in Hollywood at the press conference.
On June 26, 2007, Mo'Nique hosted the ceremonies. The "106 & Park: Live from the Red Carpet" pre-show was hosted by Terrence J & Rocsi for their first time. Diana Ross was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award this year and Don Cheadle was honored with the Humanitarian Award. 50 Cent, T.I., Ciara ,Ne-Yo, Rihanna, Yolanda Adams, Beyonce, and Kelly Rowland were announced performers. Fans can text their vote for which of 50 Cent's recent singles he will perform. They are given a choice between "Straight to the Bank" and "Amusement Park".
There will be no category for female hip hop artists this year, because of few music releases from female rappers. Beyonce has received the most amount of nominations, earning 6, one for "Best Female R&B Artist", another for the "Viewer's Choice Award", two for "Best Collaboration" ("Deja Vu" and "Upgrade U", both featuring Jay-Z), and two more for "Video of the Year" ("Irreplaceable" and "Beautiful Liar" with Shakira). Ciara, Akon, and Jennifer Hudson received three nominations each, coming in behind Beyonce.
